THUNDER BAY and SUDBURY – As today marks the National Day of Mourning for workers killed on the job, NDP Shadow Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, with responsibility for WSIB and Injured Workers, MPP Lise Vaugeois (Thunder Bay – Superior North) and NDP Shadow Minister for Labour, MPP Jamie West (Sudbury), released this statement with great sadness following the passing of a worker in Hamilton and the passing of an on-duty police officer in a highway accident.
“Our hearts are with the workers’ loved ones, communities, co-workers, and everyone impacted by these tragic losses,” said MPP Vaugeois. “On the National Day of Mourning, we remember that every worker deserves to come home safe at the end of their shift. No family should have to receive this kind of devastating news because of a workplace tragedy.
“Everyone deserves to be safe at work,” said MPP West. “Going to work shouldn’t cost workers their lives. As the Ministry of Labour investigates, workers across Ontario are once again being reminded of the importance of strong health and safety protections, proper training, and enforcement to prevent these heartbreaking deaths.
“Over the span of ten years, statistics show approximately 3,277 workers have been killed in Ontario – the equivalent of a small Ontario town. This can never be acceptable.
“Every year on the Day of Mourning, we re-commit ourselves to mourn for the dead and fight for the living. Every day, we must continue to push for prevention, enforcement, and criminal accountability for employers, so that one day, every day, workers will come home safe and sound.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
